If gravitational condensate stars (or gravastars) actually existed, they would look similar to black holes to a distant observer. Two theoretical physicists at Goethe University Frankfurt have now found a new solution to Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, according to which gravitational stars could be structured like a Russian matryoshka doll, with one gravastar located inside another.

Goethe University Frankfurt is entering the next phase of the multi-stage “Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments" competition with two research clusters. The German Research Foundation [DFG] today announced that the SCALE (cell structures) cluster initiative may in August 2024 submit a full proposal for funding as a Cluster of Excellence starting in 2026. The existing Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) Cluster of Excellence for heart and lung research will also submit a full proposal.

Luciano Rezzolla and his team at Goethe University Frankfurt contributed theorical calculations needed to interpret the radio astronomy data:
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration – including theoretical physicists from Goethe University – has released new images of M87*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87, using data from observations taken in April 2018. The new images reveal a familiar ring the same size as the one observed in 2017. This bright ring surrounds a deep central depression, “the shadow of the black hole", as predicted by general relativity. Excitingly, the brightness peak of the ring has shifted by about 30º compared to the images from 2017, which is consistent with the theoretical understanding of variability from turbulent material around black holes.
